Holy Family Newsletter (Week 2 Term 4, 2023)
Messages from the Principal
Dear Parents, Students and Parishioners,
WELCOME
Welcome everyone to an exciting new term of learning at Holy Family! We all know that children receive the best education when parents and teachers work as a team. Parents’ enthusiasm, support and involvement are integral to the success of our school as are the skills, dedication and professionalism of teachers and Learning Support Aides. Together, staff and parents can provide educational excellence for every student, so that they can achieve their personal best. Together, we can support one another to provide a friendly and supportive academic environment and, when appropriate, celebrate our great achievements.
The following is an important reminder in regard to the use of social media:
PARENT AND COMMUNITY USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA
The Catholic Schools Office (CSO) recognises that parents and the wider community members may use social media to communicate with and about the school. However, it is also recognised that such use may impact on the privacy and reputation of others, including the school.
Please be aware of the following important points:
Parents must not post content on social media that relates to other students without the consent of their parents/guardians; and
Parents must promptly notify the school of inappropriate use of, or content on any social media presence that negatively impacts on the Diocese, School or Community.
Parents need to seek permission from the Principal to establish a social media presence that is in any way associated with the school (see 3.IX);
3.IX. Another teacher or member of the school leadership team must also have full administrator access to any school social media site.
If you have a Facebook group or WhatsApp group or any social media group that is associated in any way with Holy Family School, could you please make contact with Mr. Deeps or a member of the School Leadership Team: Mrs. Katie Rich, Mr. Adam Sullivan, Mrs. Emma McFadden, Mrs. Kylie Hyde or Mr. Ben Crawford.
CURRICULUM REFORM
The NSW education system is reforming the curriculum which will be taught in all classrooms from Kindergarten to Year 12. The new curriculum, as a result of the NSW Curriculum Reform, will give students more time to focus on key learning areas so that they can acquire a deeper understanding of central concepts. It will ensure students develop strong foundations for learning, life and work in a complex, fast and ever changing world.
This reform has been informed by extensive consultation with teachers, parents and education experts, and is underpinned by extensive research. Curriculum reform involves change that spans many aspects of schooling, including teaching, learning, assessment and reporting to parents. New syllabuses provide schools with a unique opportunity to refocus and place curriculum at the heart of school planning. Key curriculum changes include:
- Building strong foundations for future learning with new English and mathematics syllabuses for Kindergarten to Year 2
- An entirely new curriculum from 2024 with new syllabuses focused on what is essential to know and do in the early and middle years of schooling, and key learning areas in the senior years
- Providing more time for teaching by reducing the hours teachers spend on extra-curricular topics and issues and compliance requirements
- Strengthening post-school pathways with new learning areas for Years 11 and 12 that clearly link learning to future employment and study options.
The new curriculum will ensure every student develops strong foundations for learning, life and work. The reforms are vital for the young people in our schools today, and for those who will arrive in the years to come. More information can be found on the NSW Department of Education and NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA)

This is a testament to the outstanding pedagogical skills and the highly emotional intelligence skills that Mrs Katie Rich possesses. Holy Family is very fortunate that not only will the students of 6 Green benefit from her highly developed skill sets but so too will the rest of the students, as well as our teachers and Learning Support Aides.
I am happy to announce that the Interviewing panel have appointed Mr James Bleakley to the position of Year Six teacher on 6 Green for the remainder of Term Four.

CHILD SAFEGUARDING WEBSITE
The Diocese of Lismore Catholic Schools Limited (DLCSL) has launched a Child Safeguarding website as part of our commitment to implementing the Child Safe Standards. It contains information on Child Safe Standards, our Commitment Statement, a contact form for concerns or inquiries, and other useful links and resources.
The website can also be accessed through the "Parent Information" tab on our school website. We encourage you to visit the website to understand our commitment to building a school where every child feels valued, heard, and protected.
Remember: Do things for others not because of who they are or what they will do in return but because of who you are. It’s good to be kind!

Learning and Teaching
2024 Mathematical Assessment Interview (MAI) and Best Start Literacy (Kindergarten only) Dates
At the beginning of each school year, students participate in assessment interviews with their new classroom teacher prior to beginning their first day back at school. The most effective way to conduct the Mathematics Assessment Interviews and Best Start Literacy Assessments (Kindergarten only) is during the first week of the new school year.
The interviews will be conducted by your child’s teacher for 2024 and are deliberately timed after the holidays as they measure students' conceptual understanding and the mathematical learning your child has acquired. It is important that parents ensure they are available during the following dates so students can attend their 2024 interview.
The interviews for Years One to Year Six (2024) will take place from Tuesday, 30th January to Friday, 2nd February. Therefore, the first day of Term One for Years One to Six will be Monday, 5th February. The interviews will take 30 minutes to complete for Years 1 – 6.
The interviews for Kindergarten (2024) will take place from Tuesday, 30th January to Monday, 5th February. Therefore, the first day of Term One for Kindergarten students will be Tuesday, 6th February. The interviews will take 75 minutes to complete for Kindergarten because the assessment will also include a Best Start Literacy component.
More information about the MAI and Best Start Literacy process, and how to make a booking, will be shared in December.

Wellbeing
Embracing Hygge: Bringing Danish Cosiness to Our Children's Lives
Hello, wonderful parents and caregivers,
In the bustling world we live in today, finding moments of tranquillity and contentment is essential for the mental well-being of both adults and children alike. One concept that beautifully encapsulates this serene approach to life is "Hygge" (pronounced hoo-guh), a Danish practice that centres around embracing cosiness, warmth, and simple pleasures. Although originating from Denmark, the principles of Hygge can be effortlessly woven into the daily lives of our children, bringing them comfort, joy, and fostering wellbeing.
Understanding Hygge
Hygge is more than just a word—it's a way of life. This Danish philosophy emphasises creating a warm and inviting atmosphere, appreciating the little things, and cherishing quality time spent with loved ones. It encourages being present in the moment, finding comfort in simplicity, and embracing a cosy ambiance, whether it's through soft blankets, warm beverages, or dimmed lights.
Benefits for Mental Health and Well-being
Stress Reduction: Incorporating Hygge into your child's routine can help reduce stress levels. By creating a soothing environment, children feel more relaxed and at ease, promoting mental peace and a reset.
Enhanced Creativity: Hygge encourages children to engage in creative and imaginative activities. Whether it's drawing, storytelling, or building forts with blankets, this promotes creative thinking and fosters a sense of wonder.
Improved Relationships: Spending quality time with family in a cosy, warm setting encourages bonding and enhances relationships. Strong connections with loved ones contribute to emotional wellbeing and a sense of security.
Better Sleep: Hygge promotes a calming bedtime routine, enhancing the quality of sleep. Comfortable surroundings and peaceful pre-sleep activities like reading or gentle music can improve your child's sleep patterns.
Incorporating Hygge into Your Child's Life
Create Cosy Spaces: Set up cosy corners in your home with soft pillows, blankets, and soft lighting. Encourage your child to read, draw, or relax in these spaces.
Unplug and Connect: Allocate device-free time for your family to engage in activities like board games, puzzles, or storytelling, fostering meaningful connections.
Share Warm Meals: Enjoy family meals together, emphasising hearty, nutritious food. Use this time to talk, laugh, and share stories.
Nature Walks: Encourage outdoor adventures like walks in the park, picnics, or stargazing. Nature is calming and offers an excellent opportunity for children to experience Hygge.
Practice Gratitude: Incorporate a daily gratitude ritual where your child reflects on what they're thankful for. This promotes a positive outlook and appreciation for life's small pleasures.
Hygge offers a beautiful approach to embracing simplicity, finding contentment in everyday moments, and fostering well-being for both children and adults. By incorporating Hygge into your child's daily life, you provide them with the tools to lead a balanced, joyful, and fulfilling existence. So, let's bring a little Danish cosiness into our Australian homes and watch our children thrive in the warmth of Hygge.
Wishing you cosy, joyful moments with your loved ones
LJ, Janine and Rennae

Chess
Chess Club happens on Thursdays in the hall at lunchtime. Students bring their lunch to maximise playing time. If your child would like to join in but doesn’t want to miss outside time, you can reassure them that some students like to play one game and then head outside so they can get the best of both worlds. Notes for the Term 4 tournament at St Joseph’s Primary School, Alstonville have been distributed to interested students (Years 2-6). The closing date for return of the permission slip is FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27. Students who missed the note can ask for one at the office. The Elders Real Estate, Lennox Head,Mary MacKillop Community Service Award
“Never see a need without doing something about it.”
The highly regarded Mary MacKillop, Community Service Award, is generously sponsored by Elders Real Estate, Lennox Head. The Mary MacKillop Award for Term Three goes to Abi Rees, from Year 6 Blue.
Abi is a kind-hearted student who follows Holy Family's code of Safety, Effort, Respect, and Self-Responsibility. She has demonstrated her commitment to her school work and to the life of her fellow students and to the school community. Abi tries to be like Jesus in her everyday actions and she follows the example of Mary MacKillop in her quiet service to him. Abi has been described as peaceful, gentle, helpful, kind, inclusive, loving and respectful to the needs of others. She displays a positive attitude to life and inspires others through her actions. Abi has over the years attended our special school Masses reverently and has helpfully contributed to making these school Masses a success, by volunteering to play an instrument. These personal qualities and actions are an example of the wonderful student she is but, more importantly, an exemplary role model who reflects and shares the values of Mary MacKillop.
The Student Forum nominated Abi, that is, students from Kindergarten through to Year Six and the decision to choose Abi was ratified by the School Principal, her teachers and Mr Campbell.
It is with great pleasure that we present the Elders Real Estate, Lennox Head Mary MacKillop Community Service Award, for Term Three, 2023, to Abi Rees.
